Lucca Allen heads back to the UK after the opening round of the British GP2 Championship, held for the first time at the Navarra Circuit in Spain, with a podium finish and twenty points on the board after an up and down start to the year saw him bounce back from a testing spill to fight for the podium in both races.

The Team FR89 Kalex rider was excited for the season opener and made steady progress during the multiple test sessions at the Spanish venue despite giving his team a lot of work to do following an early crash.

A solid qualifying session enabled Lucca to fight in both races, the #11 riding well on Saturday and Sunday. A technical issue forced a retirement but with a point to prove Lucca rode superbly on Sunday, improving his lap times to cross the line second, showing his potential and enabling him to return to the UK for round two confident in his ability.

The GP2 series once again supports the British Superbike Championship – the next round taking place at Oulton Park, a track Lucca enjoys, in a couple of weeks.

Lucca Allen

“After destroying the bike early in the test the team did an excellent job to get me back out. I took too long in qualifying to get going which was my fault but it’s all part of the learning process. The first race was going ok but unfortunately, I had to retire which meant more work for the team. Race two was much better. I was able to improve my lap times and I was much more competitive, finishing second. Overall, it was a good weekend despite the early spill. I cannot thank the team enough for all their hard work. I am happy with what we achieved and am already looking ahead to Oulton Park in a few weeks.”
